It has an Ortofon OM10 cartridge. I have been happy with the setup for some time but decided it was time to upgrade. I bought an Audio Technica 440mla from Amazon.com and it did change the sound definition and clarity. But I wanted more. I always coveted a Technics 1200 but didn't want to spend $1000 for a turntable. That's when I saw Audio-Technica AT-LP240-USB and liked the look of it. It had a perfect mix of "old" style and modern look. The frustrating part was that I couldn't find too many detailed reviews online. I have been shopping online for over 10 years but never wrote a review. I was compelled to write one for this turntable. Delivery : 36 pounds. `Nuff said Packaging: It is one of the best packed item that I have ever bought. Audio Technica made sure nothing rattles during shipping. Everything is packed in... The aesthetics of this unit are attractive, it is a very clean looking deck in glossy piano black finish. It has a bit more of a rounded "soap bar" look to it than I was expecting, but this gives it a more modern look than the AT-LP120 (styled after the classic Technics SL1200 decks). In retrospect I should have realized this, but the the lid that comes with the unit is not attached in any way. It just rests on all the corners like a brownie pan cover, or something. If you have a cabinet to keep this unit in, that may not be an issue, but replacing the lid while the record plays (can't drop the tonearm from the outside) can transmit a bump into the audio (bad for recording). It also seems likely that the lid will eventually scratch the corner surfaces of the unit, since it is not padded, or anything. Now for the important part of the turntable, the playback. I bought this turntable... I was immediately impressed by the quality of construction. The unit is very heavy and radiates an air and look of an 'audiophile' piece. I purchased a Shure M97 cartridge to go with it and am equally impressed with that. The packaging was excellent. I would just caution to be extra careful when unpacking as some of the parts are in nooks and crannies in the box and are a little difficult to see at first. After setup, I spun a few old records that I inherited from my Dad and was blown away by the warm, velvety sound of this combo. The platter starts and stops on a dime when the 'start' button is pressed and locks into it's speed incredibally quickly. The motor is very strong and hold it's speed incredibally well. As I am writing this I am spinning 'The Meters Cabbage Alley', and wooow, what a joy! This is a very, very nice turntable. |
