Four [180 gram vinyl w/ download card]

Product Description

Bloc Party will release their first new album in four years, entitled FOUR, on August 21st via Frenchkiss Records. Produced by Alex Newport (The Mars Volta, AtTheDrive-In, Polysics), the album was recorded and mixed in New York City, and is the band's first full-length since 2008's acclaimed Intimacy. Along with this exciting news, the band have announced a string of European, U.S. and festival appearances following a two year absence from the stage, which will give fans the first opportunity to hear new material from their forthcoming album, as well as classic tracks from the band's ten year history. The overwhelming demand for the band has resulted in sold out shows across the globe. Bloc Party has released three full length albums, including their Mercury Prize nominated debut, Silent Alarm, helping to shape the sound of modern British guitar music.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Reinvigorated Bloc Party Returns...., August 21, 2012
    By
Bloc Party's recent release, FOUR, is aptly named: it's been four years since their last album, the band's personnel consists of four core members, and after all, this is their fourth studio album. It comes after a two-year self-imposed hiatus that found members of Bloc Party dabbling in other projects briefly (notably, lead singer Kele Okereke's electronic-dance record THE BOXER). After the band's 3rd album INTIMACY, the break seems to have rejuvenated the band's music and energy. With help from producer Alex Newport (who has helped with At the Drive-In/The Mars Volta, and City and Colour), FOUR has an energy and immediacy that hasn't been heard in Bloc Party since their debut.

Where more indie-rock groups have decidedly gone more electronic in recent times, Bloc Party's FOUR is raw in comparison. Even with the beginning of the album, the band has taken an approach that is messy and streamlined: "So He Begins to Lie" gives a false start before launching into the song... Read more

On their aptly titled fourth album "Four", UK Indie quartet Bloc Party ditch the electro dance sound of "Intimacy" or even lead vocalist Kele Okereke's solo efforts ("The Boxer" and "The Hunter EP") and return to their guitar roots, as tracks like the crunchy pair of "So He Begins To Lie" and "Kettling", the frenetic "3x3" (with whispered to urgent vocals), the stuttering "Octopus", the Bluesy "Coliseum" (with explosive bursts of guitar), the Dance/Rock "V.A.L.I.S", the twitchy groovy "Team A" show, or the mesmerizing "Mean" (available on the deluxe edition) show.

Quieting things down are "Real Talk" (with Okereke's raw bruised vocals set to a shuffling and jangly backdrop), "Day Four" (with chiming guitars), the pulsing "Truth", and the lovely "The Healing" (sung in dreamy falsetto).

    A winner!

4.0 out of 5 stars Pitchfork Schmitchfork! Fantastic Indie Guitar Record!, August 21, 2012

This review is from: Four [Deluxe Edition] (Audio CD)
On May 31st of this year, Bloc Party frontman Kele Okereke took to the internet. He began by apologizing for two not-very-funny jokes that had come in the months since Christmas 2010. One had suggested that he was booted from the band (he explained that he himself created the lie and it got out of control), and another suggested that an aging ex-Pearl Jam drummer had replaced mainstay Matt Tong. Neither of these hoax attempts were true - nor were they necessary. After the tour supporting their last album, 2008's Intimacy, Bloc Party found themselves at a creative standstill. Okereke thought the timing was right to "make a record that excites people in the clubs like M.I.A.'s XR2," as he put it. With a solo album and a dubstep EP behind him, Okereke explained that Bloc Party were indeed back together and had, in fact, just wrapped up recording their best record to date in Manhattan.

Bloc Party has a strong following comprised of two types of fans: there are fans that embrace... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars Testament - Dark Roots Of Earth, July 31, 2012
This review is from: Dark Roots of Earth (Audio CD)
Dark Roots Of Earth is the tenth full-length studio album by the legendary San Franciscan Bay Area Thrash Metal band Testament. It was released on Nuclear Blast in the summer of 2012, following up 2008's critically acclaimed The Formation Of Damnation album. Like that album and indeed also its 1999 predecessor, The Gathering, the album was produced by the famous British producer Andy Sneap.

There was a bit of background intrigue regarding the album's drummer in as much as that although the excellent and underrated Paul Bostaph was still a member of the band just before the time of the album's writing, due to an injury, the drums on the album where actually played by another former Testament band member (and member or contributor with dozens of respected and influential bands) Gene Hoglan. Consequently the album has quite a different feel, as far as the drumming goes, to The Formation Of Damnation.

Interestingly, the band also worked with Lamb Of God's Chris... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars Testament at the height of their powers, July 31, 2012

It's been four years since Testament's comeback album The Formation of Damnation. If you enjoyed that one for whatever reasons, be prepared to be blown away by Dark Roots of Earth.

The new album finds the band crafting a sonic thrash metal masterpiece, putting more emphasis on extended melodic guitar solos, intricate arrangements, powerful rhythm work, and excellent vocals. The songs are complex yet very easy to enjoy at the same time because the band has amassed so many immortal melodies this time around. The songs are also more homogenous but varied, involving plenty of complex passages laced with melodic twin guitar harmonies, fiery lead riffs, and stomping rhythmic anchors. Chuck Billy utilizes his full spectrum of vocal talents here. He goes for the clean singing as well as his instantly recognizable throaty delivery that... Read more

I've been a Testament fan since The Legacy.
After releasing five stunning albums both lead guitarist Alex Skolnick and drummer Louie Clemente jumped ship.
Multiple lineup changes and three more albums under their belts we find the original guitarist rejoining on the last album.
So now that the new lineup has had some time to settle how does the new album stand up?
Well, it's not Formation, it's definitely more like classic Testament.
If you liked the first five albums then you'll like this one.
    Superb production.
    Killer drumming.
Brilliant lead work from Eric and Alex.
The bass is actually audible and is excellent.
Chuck Billy turns in one of his most powerful performances to date.
If you're looking for another Demonic then you might want to preview this one first.
    Classic Testament the whole way.
No weak tracks and some killer bonus tracks as well.
A dream come true for an old school fan.
    Recommended.
