3.0 out of 5 stars Works, with a little monkeying around, November 27, 2010

This review is from: Ion PowerPlay LP USB-Powered Vinyl-to-MP3 Turntable (Electronics)
Update: Turns out the turntable-speed problem I mention at the end isn't adjustable, so if you buy this turntable compare your recordings to an original LP or mp3 -- and if the speed is off, return it within 90 days.

After reading the negatives here I was a little wary, but I went ahead and bought it because of the option to play 78s at a reasonable price (so I could digitize my grandparents' 60-year-old home-recorded 78 I've been carting around with me for years). I wanted to use Audacity (freeware) for mp3s instead of Ion's iTunes-related software, and after a few hours of chagrin and web searches I finally got it working right. If I were going for wholesale LP ripping I'd get a sturdier, more professional turntable with more features, but for my immediate purposes I'm happy with it ... now.

Here are a few hints I learned along the way using Audacity 1.2.6 on a Windows XP computer; adjust accordingly for your platform. The list looks long but it's really... Read more

1.0 out of 5 stars nonfunctional; no response from manufacturer, January 24, 2011
This review is from: Ion PowerPlay LP USB-Powered Vinyl-to-MP3 Turntable (Electronics)
I received this as a Christmas present. My computer had no problem recognizing the hardware. I downloaded the software from the website, and no trouble installing that. What my turntable didn't do was...turn. At all. I contacted ION via the website and received no response. After two weeks, I tried again. Still no response. I opened the machine to see if maybe the belt had slipped off. This was terribly easy to do, considering the incredibly cheap materials the machine was made from. I couldn't believe this plastic and wire contraption was $50. The belt was firmly on the motor and drive. I suspect a faulty motor. But without ANY kind of response via the website to ION, I have no interest in purchasing ANY of their other products.

I wonder why they bothered taping a "We want to help!" letter to the exterior of the packaging....

I purchased this product as a gift for my hubby. Couldn't get the software that came with it to play through the computer speakers. After googling the problem i found that the turntable could record using audacity, a free download that i have already been using for a couple of years to cut my own ringtones. Worked perfectly! I deleted the ez vinyl software and itunes. Don't need'em. Love the turntable and have hours and hours of classic rock to convert. He's going to be very busy.

Get audacity free at: [...]

If you plan to convert to mp3 you will have to download a lame encoder.

Follow the directions here for a free lame encoder:

Here's the link to good product manual to help with using audacity with a usb turntable:
[...]
It's not the manual for this turntable but the directions still work.

The Crosley CR40 is a great priced, great quality product for the average music listener. While it may not contend with hundreds of dollars worth of audiophile equipment, it is more than capable of providing a great listening experience in a casual setting.

4.0 out of 5 stars good record player, December 1, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase( What's this?)
This review is from: Crosley Mini Turntable (Black) (Electronics)
in early november i brought hthis little record player for myself. i wanted something where i could listen to my rrecords in my family room i have 2 other record players butt i did not want to move them from my livingroom or my bedroom. it works well butt when they say it's a mini turntable don't underestimate that. the thing is tiny the turntable is only about 5 to 6 inches in diameter. the speakers are very small and do not put out a lot of sound its good for small rooms like an office or dormroom. it has jacks on the back of it so it can be connected with another stereo i have mine connected with the cd player witch has bigger speakers and the sound from the record will mcome out the big speakers. it makes a great christmas or birthday gift for your kids, grandkids friends and family anybody that has records would enjoy thiis record player people of all ages would love it. even though it is small it will play all types of records speeds 33 45 and 78.

This is the best of the smaller Crosley record players. The sound is quite good and the price can't be beat. I am so glad there is a company like Crosley still making record players. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Exactly what I was looking for!, November 16, 2010
This review is from: Crosley CR6002A-BK Revolution Portable USB Turntable (Black) (Electronics)
Looking for a record player for the house -- for both casual listening and making mp3s of my collection. Everything I looked at took up TOO much room -- either on my desk when recording, or around my stereo system. Saw this and decided to give it a try. Glad I did.

Was really surprised by the build quality. Although the unit is plastic, it seems to be built around a sturdy metal frame -- the hinge mechanism is steel, not plastic as I expected. Controls are right on top, and the 45 rpm adapter is a sturdy rubber and stores in the unit. Tone arm is metal and plastic, with a nice diamond cartridge.

Lots of listening options -- headphone and audio out. Internal speaker is a bit tinny, but met my expectations given the small size of the unit. REALLY AWESOME -- FM transmitter! This worked great with my stereo. Just dialed in the radio station and listened wirelessly from about 15 feet. Works much better than the junk I bought for my in-car iPod use... Read more

1.0 out of 5 stars Wobble wobble wobble Ranga-Ranga-Ranga-Ranga..., January 12, 2011

Moobs (New York, NY) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Crosley CR6002A-BK Revolution Portable USB Turntable (Black) (Electronics)
I thought this thing would be a great way to have a turntable around the house without the need to permanently set it up somewhere. Was very excited to try it when it came...OH MY =/

This thing sounds TERRIBLE!! That is an understatement. If it just sounded low quality, that would be fine. The bigger problem is that the thing is uneven and wobbles and makes the records sound like the whole thing is going through some kind of awful chorus pedal or fast flange or something. YUCK! Not to mention that the speed is a little off no matter what, so the pitch is also always a little off.

It sucks, because I really wanted to like this! The form factor and USB out is perfect for my needs...unfortunately, the thing doesn't play records worth a damn...which kind of defeats the purpose.

5.0 out of 5 stars Revolution pretty cool!, November 27, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase( What's this?)
This review is from: Crosley CR6002A-BK Revolution Portable USB Turntable (Black) (Electronics)
I have been working the Revolution for a few days now and am impressed. I ordered this as a "gift for myself" and am glad I did. I needed something portable because I attend quite a few record shows and like to listen and "test" the vinyl prior to paying for it, especially if it is a rare or expensive album, and this fits the bill. I have seen a number of collectors in recent years with the old "Sound Burgers", and this is no different, but better in my opinion. The build quality is solid. While the outer cover is plastic, there is a metal frame underneath.

The unit has a nice, magnetic cartridge. That surprised me. Also, I was unaware when I bought it about the FM broadcasting capability. It just blows me away to sit in my kitchen and play my albums through my Bose wave radio 10 feet away. Very good sound and very easy to do. The battery life is unbelievable. I am likely nearing 24 hours on the original batteries and things still sound good. I... Read more
