3.0 out of 5 stars Not satisfied with the audio quality, September 7, 2007
This review is from: Denon DP-300F Fully Automatic Analog Turntable (Electronics)
I did quite a bit of research into turntables before buying this model. This unit seemed relatively solidly constructed, and had a handsome appearance. I was a bit put off at the prospect of spending $500-$1000 on a new turntable and wasn't sure if all that fuss was really necessary.

The turntable only takes a few minutes to set up, and comes with a mediocre pre-mounted moving magnet cartridge.

After set up, I switched on the built in phono amp and connected the unit directly to my receiver. The sound was not bad, but was also not exactly what I had expected. Surface noise was relatively high, bass and low mids were muddy and broke up a bit, and highs sounded a bit rolled off. I then hooked the turntable up to my backup 20-year old Onkyo receiver in my office with a built in phono preamp, and I noticed an improvement in sound quality. However, I was still not happy with the overall sound of the unit, it was lacking in overall detail. I thought that... Read more

3.0 out of 5 stars Works Ok Though Not Thrilling, September 24, 2007

The Denon works well for an automatic turntable. The internal phono preamp means it can be connected to any available line input on a receiver. The preamp can be switched off if your receiver has a Phono input.

I upgraded the phono cartridge to a Shure M97XE and did not bother to even listen to the Denon factory installed cartridge. A small needle nose pliers (not supplied) and lots of patience is a must.

The user manual is well written and comprehensive. BUT do not plug the turntable in until all the adjustments have been made. (I had to learn the hard way.)

I didn't expect audiophile sound here. Listening to Pop or Classical at medium-low volume is satisfactory. But there is no isolation from external sounds or vibrations. If you like Rock or music of any genre played loud, feedback can set in and sound terrible not to mention the possibility of damaging your speakers or amp.

5.0 out of 5 stars Better than expected, April 22, 2007
This review is from: Denon DP-300F Fully Automatic Analog Turntable (Electronics)
I am a professional musician, I hadn't planned on actually listening to my LP's when I purchased this turntable, I only wanted a quality turntable to allow me to transfer my old LP's to disc. I still cannot believe my ears when playing my 20+ year old LP's on this turntable. For small group jazz, the sound is better than the CD's I have of the same material. I have never belived that LP's could ever sound better than a CD, now I do, although when it comes to orchestral music, I still think CD's still sound better due to lack of compression. My music studio has 10 speakers, 2 amps and all kinds of effects processors to make digital music come alive. I never would have believed a turntable and 2 speakers could produce nearly the same effect. Sure, there are pops and hisses on occasion, but the warmth and size of the sound stage is well worth it. This turntable tracks perfectly and is easy to balance the tonearm. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic piece of gear, perfect for beginner DJs!, December 9, 2009

This review is from: ION Audio iCUE3 Discover DJ System (Electronics)
I've had the ION Discover DJ for about a week now and it's been a great MIDI DJ controller so far. It's highly usable with just the right amount of controls for basic mixing and scratching. For being mostly plastic, the device feels well built - with the knobs and buttons twisting/clicking solidly. The crossfader has a metal stem with a removable cap(!), and cuts smoothly.

The jogs are awesomely functional. They are touch sensitive (i can hold the unit upside down and activate the platters). They are also as smooth as butter, and amazingly sensitive when it comes to their scratch performance.

The current packed-in software (Mixvibes Cross LE) is great for beginners/intermediate djs, even some pros might prefer it. But the great thing about the Discover DJ is that it's also a MIDI device that can be used with any dj software that supports a midi controller (NI Traktor, Virtual DJ, Mixxx, DJay, and others), with a bit of mapping.

It works great with Itunes music, and it loads music pretty quickly, but you cant mix without the headphones, otherwise EVERYBODY will hear what you're trying to do...in that case it needs to have the headphone jack and it DOES NOT! it has a preview window but EVERYONE can hear what you re doing..in other words it lacks a very important part. I just dont understand why they wouldnt put one in....to get you to buy extra crap??? i dunno...so its a pretty good TOY for kids...not really if you want to get into the DJ biz. you have been warned...

This review is from: Crosley CR249-TA Radio Keepsake USB Turntable-Tan (Electronics)
So i got the unit and put some records on ...
1. Sound
The sound is mediocre. It is reminiscent of the middle 50's to late 60's low end phonographs. Tone adjustment is a single pot type that ranges from low to high, bass is questionable.
2. Turntable
This is all plastic, the tone arm has no weight adjustment for the audiophile collectors and is not a quality arm, the speed switch is of low end quality (3 position slider type)
3. Case
It is a good solid wood type looks and feels good, Hardware is mid line quality.
4. USB
The system works as advertised however there is a lag time between the player speakers and play through on the computer which , if the player volume is up will give you an echo, this is not recorded, mearly a time difference between the player and computer. The player tone control does not effect the recording on the computer as it is a direct thru put from the tone arm to USB to computer.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fun with Records!, January 29, 2008
By
Charlie C. Fan (Jersey City / New York City) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Let me tell you a story. Recently, I went on a road trip up and down the west coast. In a small city known as San Francisco, I came across a record store, alas, it was the famous Rasputin! Marvelous music abounded everywhere, the earthly delights, it was paradise of rare form.

Since then, I have returned to my humble abode and realized that I do not possess a record player nor have I ever owned one (seeing as my birth was a decade after the 70s). Thus began my holy quest, many retailers have I visited and many forums have I searched for wisdom and an answer.

Well...

One learns soon that the Crosley name is well-spoken of in this trade. One also learns soon that record players are a dying breed. Golly! This is where the Crosley CR249 comes in. This behemoth of a record player also provides a future-proof USB connection, thus allowing one to interface it with a modern age contraption known as the Personal Computer and digitize those... 5.0 out of 5 stars Been debating this record player? Turned off by horrifying reviews? READ THIS., June 21, 2011
Okay, so I've been, for about 6 months now, debating whether or not to purchase this turntable, and I have a feeling that is the case with a lot of people. For starters, I'm a musician, and I record music regularly, always trying to achieve a quality sound. When I read the reviews of people who claim to be hearing horrible sound and that the turntable is poorly made and cheap, I was constantly turned off to the idea of buying this. Long story short, my dad works in sales and had enough points on a rewards website to get one of these guys. We finally decided to go for it since it was basically free. The turntable just arrived in the mail and I'm currently listening to Dark Side of The Moon on it. Let me first say that it's not comparable to having four bose bookshelf speakers in each corner of the room, but seriously, this thing does sound good. For someone who just wants to get into vinyl and experience that warm crackle and unique tangibility that comes with playing records... Read more
